Conclusion

Clinical/counseling psychology and mental health counseling in Japan have grown rapidly during the last 10 years and the changes in Japanese society call for increased contributions to social problems at various levels in educational systems, organizational settings, families, and medical systems. The future health of counseling and psychotherapy practice will require attentiveness to Japan’s 21st century challenges, the further creation of effective interventions, the continued development of training programs, and movement toward a national consensus about licensing. Our future and current goals are to demonstrate that we are, in fact, not only equipped to deal with these problems but also to effectively contribute to solutions.
