I headed for the Holler, and some lunch. I remembered something, and asked, “George, did you ask Scotti about that stunner-proof vest I was wondering about the other day?”

“I did, Boss. I figured you had gotten busy and failed to follow up on it.”

“Thanks. What did she have to say?”

“That an implant would be simpler, but you already have that.”

“Does she have a vest, or not?”

“She has something, but she said it was too constricting to wear for very long, and she thought your implant would work better, anyway.”

“I understand.”

I parked in the barn, and went to the house. Nikki said, “You’re early today, Caveman.”

“Earlier than yesterday, at least. How are things here?”

“Quiet. All the kids are down at the plant.”

“Do you want to go to town for lunch?’

“Sounds good. I don’t feel like cooking, and I doubt you do either.”

“I’m not as tired as I was last week, but I’d still rather eat someone else’s cooking. You want to take your new car? You haven’t gotten to drive it much, yet.”

“That sounds like fun. I’ll try and restrain myself from ion trails, though.”

“Probably best. That tends to get people upset.”

We locked up, and headed into town. Julie met us at the door. “Jim and Janice are already here. I put them in the back room, because I figured if there was one BSR employee here, you would fill up the back room, before it was over with.”

I replied, “It sure seems to work out that way. I guess you’re just before losing a waitress, huh?”

“You mean Hannah? Looks that way. Couldn’t you up the payments on Jim’s loan, so they need the money?”

“I’d like to help you out, but I don’t think your plan would work, and I don’t want to hear the Squatch gripe about Jim scrounging for cash, to keep Hannah from having to go back to work.”

“You’re probably right. You need to get in here, though. Jim and Janice brought the baby with them. He’s a cutie.”

“Ain’t they all?”

“Most of them. Rena showed me some baby pictures that your mom gave her, back in the day.”

Nikki said, “Oh, I’ve got to see those! How bad are they?”

“If you didn’t know better, you’d think he was half-Squatch.”

I replied, “I could do worse than to be related to Thump and Sit.”

“Get in here, you goof.”

We headed on back. Julie was right. Young Marty was a cutie. Nikki wasn’t surprised at all when I sat next to him. Janice said, “Oh no! Our little boy, being exposed to a bad influence.”

Jim said, “It could be worse. He could be old enough to understand Bob’s sense of humor.”

I ignored them, and asked, “Surprised to see you here, Juke. Didn’t you get invited to the party down at the plant?”

“Mom isn’t sure that’s someplace I need to be, Uncle Bob.”

I looked at Janice. She said, “Well, it is a plant, with a lot of rough men, working hard. I can’t imagine the language is fit for a young girl’s ears.”

Nikki said, “Well, Becky has yet to come home asking me what any new words mean.
