Chapter Five

Nothing.

No answer. More eerie silence. I stand stock still, listening.

Forest pines creak under the force of a sudden gust of wind. And then, complete stillness as if all the air has been sucked out of the forest, not even bird song or crickets.

There are no rides. No lights from the club. Literally nothing but blackness.

Ok. So, I’ve heard of people getting lost and disappearing in National Parks. Maybe this is one of those things where I’m near the whole thing, but I took a wrong turn.

As far as I know, there are no cliffs to fall off here, so if I slowly walk, maybe I’ll get back to civilization.

Every few feet, I stop and spin and listen for human voices. Nothing. My pulse trips, but I tell myself it’s going to be fine. How far could I get from everything anyway?

I start to place twigs across my path to mark where I’ve been. Just in case, god forbid, I’m out here all night. At least I brought my water bottle and a couple protein bars in my backpack. The moon begins to rise, and I watch open mouthed as it ascends, full and huge and blood orange on the horizon. Once the moon is overhead, I’ll be able to see better.

I take a couple sips from my water bottle and carry on. Twigs crack underfoot, but something in the distance catches my eye. A light. Shining from something. It’s got to be human. I plod onward, occasionally yelling, though no one answers, except for the owls.

I was expecting the haunted forest to be spooky in a fun kind of way, but this is unnerving. Low lying fog swirls among the trees, illuminated by the rising moon, but deeper into the forest its very dark.

Strange sounds echo around me, and I swirl around, unsure of what I’m hearing. Again, it comes. This time I can make it out, the clopping of horse’s hooves.

The clopping becomes a galloping, straight at me, louder and louder. I run, fearing I’ll be trampled, and then as the sound is truly upon me, I dart behind a tree and watch, intending to holler at the mysterious riders.

I grip the tree, pulse racing, hoping to god that no spiders crawl into my hair or down my neck.

A horse and rider fly at me, a black cape billowing around the rider whose head is glowing. He’s chasing another man on a horse in front of him, and suddenly the air is charged with the sound of an axe zinging through the air.

Startled, I leap back, the splintering thud of the axe still echoing through the night. It finds its mark with gruesome precision, cleaving through the head of the rider. The pale moonlight casts an eerie glow upon the grim scene, illuminating the sinister figure in pursuit—a man with a grinning, pumpkin-headed mask.

My voice catches in my throat; there's no way in hell I'm going to holler for help now. My mind struggles to wrap itself around the nightmare that's unfolding before my eyes.
