True to his word, Alex bundled her back into bed and cleaned up the water. She tried to bring him some towels and he had resorted to tickling her, so in the name of self-preservation and jet lag, she had lain in bed, still half asleep. Allie was an excellent planner. And thanks to her excellent planning, she didn’t have to worry about going to work for a few more days yet.

Her shift was three twelve-hour days a week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Thanks to the way some people preferred to work, she only worked weekends once a month, and when she worked hers, she had the previous Thursday and Friday off. She had come back on a Friday, which gave her a couple of days to acclimate, unpack and just rest.

A warm, calloused hand on her calf had her lids drifting slowly open. She heaved a sigh and rolled her head towards Alex, who had knelt down and had his chin resting on the bed, on a level with hers now that he knew she wasn’t sleeping. “Why are you here, Alex? You can’t possibly be interested in me,” she said softly, staring into his dark chocolate eyes.

He pressed one finger to her mouth, stroking her lower lip as he asked, “After what happened six months ago, what happened last night, and this morning, you’re telling me I can’t be interested in you?”

“Six months ago, we were both more asleep than anything else. And when you realized what was going on, and who you were with, you were disgusted,” she said, closing her eyes and turning her head away.

“What?”

“There’s never been anything wrong with my mind or my hearing, Alex. I saw the look on your face and I heard you clear as day. I don’t believe this, you said. I didn’t ask to be a pity fuck and you can—”

His hand caught her chin and his dark eyes glittered angrily as he growled, “I don’t do pity fucks. And I wasn’t disgusted with anybody but myself. You’re my best friend’s baby sister, and you damn near got yourself killed and what the hell did I do?”

Allie opened her mouth but whatever she was going to say died when he covered her mouth with his just as he drove one thick finger deep inside her, slowly working it past her initial resistance as his thumb started to circle around her clit.

He nipped her lip and swallowed the startled cry that followed before kissing his way down her neck and capturing a stiff swollen nipple in his mouth while he added a second finger and rubbed her tauntingly before driving back into her—stroking her slick, wet inner walls, going deep inside to find the sensitized nerve endings—as he kissed his way back up to nip the long slender line of her throat.

When he had her shuddering, when he had her lifting her hips to meet him, he lifted his mouth and whispered savagely against her ear, “And what I couldn’t believe was this—”as he screwed his wrist and slid his fingers back inside.
