The familiar tingling spread through Angie’s body and she opened her eyes to bright sunlight in the grassy meadow by the stream. Water gurgled and splashed over smooth rocks. She was back in her other world.

Bolting upright, she checked her hands. When she found them empty, her heart sank. She’d slept with one hand on Rob and the other on the picture of Chloe.

Sadness wracked her. A lump formed in her throat, and her eyes stung with tears. Each photo of her daughter chipped away at a part of her. She couldn’t see or touch Chloe anymore.

With a smile, she remembered how she thought she wouldn’t be able to sleep last night. But after making love with Rob, she’d fallen into a deep slumber. One she hadn’t woken from until landing back in her other world.

Lifting her face to the sun, she thought back to the photo of her daughter and smiled, hoping for a glint of memory about Chloe. But as if a strong steel door shut on her mind, she couldn’t tap into anything. Drugs? With fleeting knowledge of the other world, she grasped the evil of the word, but had she tried to help Chloe rid herself of drugs?

Angie stood and strolled to the nearby willow tree. The long, pliable branches hung to the ground like curtains. She parted them and stepped into their shade. Leaning against the sturdy trunk, she closed her eyes, not willing to let go of the vision of her daughter.

And then she remembered.

Chloe on a swing set at the park, laughing as Angie pushed her. Chloe’s blonde hair breezed behind when she swung down.

“Higher, Mommy, higher,” her voice rang out and echoed in Angie’s mind.

She squeezed her eyes to keep them closed, wanting more than anything to hold the vision. It was so real that she reached out as if to stroke her daughter’s bright hair. The picture morphed into another, and Chloe stood before her in the pink tutu. “Mommy, I’m scared. I don’t want to go on that stage.”

Angie swallowed hard. She remembered her daughter. Remembered the things they used to do. Happiness warmed her skin.

“You’ll be fine, sweetheart. Just pretend you’re at practice.” She mouthed the words as if rote memory planted them years ago.

More pictures flashed by in her mind: Chloe at the beach jumping in the waves, Chloe riding a bike. They’d been close. She’d been a good mother.

She opened her eyes when the visions disappeared. Closing her eyes again, she willed the memories to continue, begged for them to return, but her mind remained blank. The shadowy interior of the willow tree now felt cold, damp. She hustled forward, back into the light, rustling the skirt of her nightgown, needing to feel the sun again.

Without Rob she wouldn’t have found this treasured memory. She perched by the stream, soothed by the steady current of water cascading over the rocks.

But her need for him transcended the practical. They’d made love last night. A ghost and a freaking human.
