Civil rights are freedoms like voting, free speech, and religion that all citizens should have.

Gandhi didn’t believe in violence or anger. He felt that love and truth were powerful enough to make great changes. He called this belief satyagraha (sah-tyuh-GRAH-hah). Gandhi planned to fight with satyagraha, not bullets.

Gandhi led Indians in South Africa in protesting unfair voting laws and other injustices. They were often attacked and beaten. Gandhi spent time in jail. Some people were even killed, but Gandhi and his followers never fought back. When Indians began to get more rights, Gandhi returned home. It was 1915, and he was forty-five years old.
