Chapter Nine

As I opened the vestibule door, I could see the dark blue uniforms of the police. “Great,” I said.

“Is everything all right?” Logan was behind me.

“Don’t do that,” I said crossly. “Don’t sneak up behind me. I didn’t even hear you leave the kitchen.”

“Part of the job,” he said quietly. “The cops?”

“Yes,” I couldn’t contain my irritation. “Because of Ash.”

“The guy who had the bracelet?” His humor was back. “The Indiana Jones look alike?”

I was not amused. “Yes. You can forget you ever heard me say that. Can you go back to the kitchen?” I was acutely aware of how this was going to look. They’d met me while I was reporting the disappearance of a man I’d just met; now I was here with another man, a big, handsome man, only a couple of days later—good lord. I could hear the gossip.

Well, it was no one’s business but mine. I yanked open the door as I pasted a smile on my face. “Officers,” I said. “What can I do for you?”

Andy Dentwhistle, along with Scott Trenton glowering over his shoulder, stood on my front porch.

“Hey, Wynter,” he said. “We came by because we have some more questions for you. May we come in?”

“Sure,” I said, stepping back. “Of course.” I turned and walked toward the kitchen. “Would you close both doors, please?” I asked over my shoulder. I didn’t slow down.

Once in the kitchen, I leaned against the far counter. Both men came in, Andy looking less comfortable than Scott. Scott just looked annoyed, and as though he was trying to be threatening. “Have a seat,” I said. I gestured at the island.

I noted that only my cup was on the island. The burner had been moved to the center, as though it was nothing more than a pleasant decoration. “Would you like some coffee, or tea?” I asked.

“You have company?” Scott Trenton asked.

“I do,” I said. “But I don’t see how that’s important.”

“It’s important if we say it is,” Scott shot back.

“Hey,” Logan’s deep voice came from the living room. “Wynter, are you all right?” He looked around as though he hadn’t seen the officers before. “What’s going on?”

“Who are you?” Scott asked, taking a step toward Logan.

“I’m Logan Gentry, a friend of the family. I’ve been travelling, but when I came back to the States, I heard about Derek, and came to offer my condolences,” Logan said, walking toward Scott with his hand out. “He was too young.”

“That he was,” Andy said, watching Logan and Scott shake hands. “What is it you do, Mr. Gentry?”

“I’m a curator for private collectors,” Logan said, big smile still in place. “They hire me to find pieces for them. You know collectors. There’s never enough time for them. Which is good for guys like me.” He stepped to the side and shook Andy’s hand.

“We need to speak to her alone,” Scott said.

“Wynter?” Logan looked at me.

“Logan is a good friend. I’m fine with him being here,” I said, directing my comments to Andy.
