We spent the entire day on the terrace, with each of them taking turns challenging my powers. First, Nesrin used her magic that controlled water to make me feel as if I was drowning from within.

Panic rushed in as I watched her eyes change before me, the blacks narrowing into slits as the green began to glow. It was like the songs of the sirens I learned about––alluring no matter the fear you had. It was impossible to fight their influence.

After many failed attempts, she moved on to her hands swirling with water, and I was tasked with keeping my fires under my skin lit while she submerged them. But I couldn’t do that either.

Next, Axel used his shadows to hold me still, placing dark illusions in my mind to scare me. I tried to fight back at first, but realized what he showed me didn’t scare me like it did in the past. He showed me the vampires, who ripped into victims. One after another as I moved to the front of the line, awaiting my turn.

Then, I saw the werewolves devouring a village of people, before setting their sights on me. After that, he showed me the sirens as they pulled me overboard to the profound depths of the sea, biting me as their venom shredded through my veins. And last, the witches who took my life source in a sacrifice to feed their magic.

I knew all these stories, but there were bigger monsters to fear now, and maybe I was one of them.

We took a few breaks throughout the day to drink water and eat something light. Levanna used her magic to change me into black leathers in the early afternoon, which I didn’t mind because I felt more like myself in them.

I sat on the stone ground, looking up at the darkening sky as I took another drink before looking over the terrace again. Everyone had left, but the barrier was still up because there was one more person I hadn’t faced off against…

I felt him move next to me, offering his hand. “It’s my turn now, Davyna.”

I glanced up at his face, those eyes swirling with amber and crimson. My stomach fell as I took his hand. He pulled me up, and his eyes trailed over my leathers and a smirk grew on his face. He took a step in, causing me to lean back and watch his every move.

His hands went into my hair, undid the clip, and allowed it to fall over my shoulders.

“What makes you tick?” he asked, running his hand through my hair as he wrapped his finger around the ends. I felt my own power ignite, wanting to press into his touch...

What the fuck? No! I straightened myself, fighting against my own thoughts, and pushed whatever temptation that was away.

“Right now? Just you.” I pulled back, leaving his hand still in the air as he smiled wider, allowing his wings to spread wide from his back. Taking them in, I looked over each black feather laying tightly against one another.
