The Owyhigh Lakes were purportedly named for Yakima Chief “Owhi,” said to have lent horses to the young abolitionist Theodore Winthrop as he explored the Cascades in the mid-1850s, before he met his demise on a battlefield of the Civil War in 1861.

Miles and Directions

0.0Start heading south at the Owyhigh Lakes trailhead, across from the small parking area.

3.0The trail to Tamanos Creek Camp appears on your left (east). If you plan to camp here, you may want to leave your packs before moving on to the lakes, just 0.5 mile up the trail.

3.5Reach Owyhigh Lakes, with fields of flowers in the foreground and Governors Ridge as a backdrop. Retrace your steps back to Tamanos Creek Camp or back to the trailhead.

7.0Arrive back at the trailhead.
