Jackie was feeling pretty overwhelmed by the time Hank finished showing her the ropes of the reporting system, but he was patient with her, and they had a good time chatting at lunch afterward. As they finished up their burgers, she said, “I feel much better now that I have some food in my system. I think I’m ready to continue my lessons.” She tossed some money on the table for their bill, and they walked outside together.

“You’ve got to make sure to eat, Jackie, especially when you’re on stakeouts,” Hank said. “I always have a bag with snacks in the van in case I can’t leave. And the most important thing to remember is to never drink too much water or coffee; what goes in must come out, and if the action starts there’s no way you can leave the van.”

“No worries on that front, I’ve got the bladder of a truck driver,” Jackie said.

“Good to know.” Hank chuckled.

As they stepped off the elevator to their office, Martha was waiting for them. “Welcome back. Jackie, let me show you your cubicle.”

Jackie smiled. “My first real office!” She tossed Hank a wave. “Thanks again, man. See you soon.”

Martha led her past the partners’ fancy offices—all the doors were closed—and around a corner. Jackie stopped in her tracks; there were several brightly colored balloons attached to her new space, along with a handmade sign that read, “WELCOME JACKIE!” All the PIs who had been at the morning briefing were gathered together—including Hank, who had somehow managed to get there before her and Martha—and they clapped when they saw her.

She put her arms out wide. “Wow, what a welcome. Thank you.”

One by one, they all gave her a quick pat on the back.

Hank was last. “We put together an array of fun items to make you feel at home while you’re here.” He handed her a large gift bag. “Once you’ve unpacked and gotten settled let me know; I’ll come back over here and we can have you log in and try filling out those forms online.”

Jackie took the bag. “Gee, thanks!” The PTA moms at Wyatt’s school have never been this nice to me, she thought, smiling to herself. As her coworkers dispersed back to their stations, she sat at her L-shaped desk and ran her hand over it—it was clean and smooth—and she noted the corkboard border above the desk with stick pins in it. Then she proceeded to unpack her gift bag.

There were several bags of nuts, gum, lip balm, a roll of toilet paper, handy-wipes, a large magnifying glass, black sunglasses, a black baseball hat, and a picture frame she could tack up on the corkboard above her desk after she brought a photo from home to put inside. The last item was an empty, gallon-size plastic container with a Post-it on it that read, In case you have to pee in the van. She shook her head and laughed. All I need now is a Foley catheter with a bag in case I ever have to stay in there extra-extra long.
