Monday night before the 2016 presidential election, I was with President Obama at a Hillary Clinton rally at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, and we were standing backstage. Hillary, Bill, and Chelsea Clinton, Mrs. Obama, Jen Palmieri, and lots of others from the Clinton campaign were also there, along with some big celebrities, such as Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi. A big outdoor stage was set up, and a considerable crowd had gathered for the rally and a planned fireworks show at the end. It was a crazy environment I will never forget. I was standing backstage with my medical bag watching it all play out. It was different than countless other rallies I had witnessed. This was a full-blown celebration. A huge victory party! Everybody was high-fiving and hugging, congratulating Hillary and Palmieri for winning. They were even discussing if they should continue with the fireworks or if that would look like they were being presumptuous and rubbing it in. I mean, it was like the election was already over.
Iâll admit, I had apparently drunk the Kool-Aid too. Even though I was very depressed and upset that she might be our next president and I was desperately hoping Trump would pull it off and win, Iâd been watching MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News, and I thought it was probably over, and she would win it. It didnât matter what you watched; Trump appeared to be down big time, and at this point, there was no way he was going win. At least, that is what the mainstream media and the talking heads had told us. I couldnât believe she was going to be our next president. I just kept thinking, âThis sucks!â
I knew I wasnât going to be her doctor. Iâd already made plans to leave. I was already a navy rear admiral and had put in over twenty years. I was looking forward to retirement. I thought Iâd maybe sit on some boards or do some consulting work, and I was looking forward to moving back to Texas.
Iâd told President Obama that I was leaving. I was supposed to accompany him to California on his last flight on Air Force One and then turn my bag over to whoever the incoming administration picked as their doctor. She wasnât elected yet, but I decided that once she was in, I was out. I had no intentions of staying; I was done. It was time for me to move on.
I came to work the following morning. It was Tuesday, and it was Election Day. Everything was normal, and I finished up my work and drove home somewhat late. I was driving home and listening to some of the early exit polls, and there were a few of them coming out, like, âWow, this looks better for Trump than we thought. Is there something going on here?â Remember, everybody thought Hillary was going to winâeverybody. Once I got home, I turned on the TV, and the returns were coming in, and thatâs when it started getting a little weird.
