Autumn
My head was spinning with possibilities, but I was fixated on the fact that he wanted to be with me. So much that heâd talked to Dani about finding me a paid internship so we could give our relationship a try. That this gorgeous, sweet, incredible man was so into me, heâd found me a job in my field.
A low-paying, entry-level job, but a job with a professional hockey team, nonetheless.
âHave I told you how amazing you are?â I whispered, suddenly overcome with emotion.
âYou donât have to,â he responded, reaching for my hand. âI donât want anything except for us to be together. It occurred to me while I was gone that this is our shot. These next few weeks are the only chance weâll have to figure out what we want, and if thereâs more to us than chemistry and good sex. If we can make this into something long-term.â
âButâ¦â There was obviously something on her mind and she was struggling to get it out.
âSay it,â I encouraged her. âWhatever it is, say it. Iâm not going to be mad or make any assumptions. We donât have the time to play coy relationship games. Tell me what your hesitation is.â
âThe only way I can survive on a salary that low is if we live together,â I blurted out, nearly wincing as I awaited his response.
It was a big deal, especially considering his children would undoubtedly come stay with us in the off-season, and I barely knew them. We had a lot to consider before I could even entertain the prospect of this paid internship opportunity, but he surprised me with his response.
âThat was a given,â he said quietly. âOf course, youâll live with me. If you want to, that is. I hoped you would, but I didnât want to force you into anything.â
âThatâs the problemâitâs not optional financially and puts you in the position of supporting me. If weâre being honest, I hate that. Iâm going from my parents to you. And as an independent, modern woman, that feels wrong. Iâm struggling with that part of it.â
âYou knowâ¦â He hesitated, as if trying to gather his thoughts. âIâm all for whatever a woman wants to do. Work, not work, work part-time, whatever it is, but there will be sacrifices in the decisions we make as a couple. Iâm not a professional athlete anymore, so Iâll never make the money Cam makes. If weâre together, weâll have a comfortable life, but there wonât be exotic vacations multiple times a year or a big mansion like the Petrovs have. My house is nice enough, but I bought it on the cheap, knowing Iâd have to do some upgrades. Renovation is expensive so itâs not where I wanted it to be yet, butââ
âWhich is why I feel like I should contribute something, but between a car payment, insurance, gas, and whatever else comes up, I wonât have a lot left for that.â
âHoney, I donât need money from you. Renovations and vacations and all of that will come if youâre patient.
