Chapter 4

Avery spent the next two weeks thinking about her night out with Johnny. She acknowledged she was beginning to fall for him. She had no idea what kind of relationship they could have.

But perhaps she didn’t need to focus on the conventional definitions of a relationship. After all she and Johnny were anything but normal. Besides, she had one of those so-called normal relationships in the past and all it did was give her trouble. Johnny, on the other hand, was good to her. He was thoughtful, sensitive, and wanted her just as much as she wanted him. So what if they could only be together during a full moon?

Maybe she needed to start looking at it like a long distance relationship or like couples in the military who saw each other between deployments.

She wished she could be with Johnny every single day, but this was what they had been given by whatever powers that be that existed in the world. She had to find a way to make the best of it, to be happy with the precious time the universe gifted her and Johnny.

One balmy night around two in the morning, she couldn’t sleep and got up, dressed and left her apartment. It was the eve of the full moon. Avery walked on the beach and found him on the hill.

The beach was empty of people. He stood alone, looking out at the blue-black ocean as it sent rolling foam to shore. The moon shone on him, painting his shirt stark white against the night. As she neared him, she felt the atmosphere change. It shrouded her in its cool, ethereal midst. To Avery, it was like stepping into a different world and leaving her own behind.

“Johnny.” She spoke his name in a small voice, afraid to talk louder, as though it might shatter the delicate threads that allowed the two of them to exist on the same plane.

He heard her and turned his head. “Avery, what are you doing on the beach this late at night?”

“I couldn’t sleep. I didn’t want to wait until dawn to see if I could find you." A breeze stirred the hem of her light cotton skirt as she climbed the hill to meet him. He reached down and took her hand to help her up the last couple feet. He maintained his hold once she stood with him at the top. Avery’s eyes closed as Johnny drew her in for a kiss.

She welcomed the touch of his lips and the feeling of being in his arms again. For the past month, she wrestled with the constant thought of him never returning and the fear that their encounter on the pier had been the last. Avery was grateful to be wrong.

His kisses were light at first before he gradually pressed his lips harder against her mouth to match his growing desire. A tiny moan escaped her as she opened her lips a little to receive his tongue. She returned the intense kiss.
