“Right,” Harry said after she’d finished her summing up. “Well, it seems clear the first step is to find out if this is definitely a murder or not.”

Diana felt downcast. After laying her emotions from throughout the day bare, she’d expected something more. Maybe an indrawn gasp of breath. Perhaps a crying jag.

No. Instead, she got logic. Oh, well. She gave herself a mental shake and concentrated again on what he was saying.

“Even if nobody took a knife or gun to Doe, it’s still murder if they were giving an underage girl alcohol to drink.”

“It doesn’t matter.” Harry seemed to realize how that would sound a second after the words left his mouth. He held up a hand. “I don’t mean, it’s not terrible and in the situation, somebody should be punished, but to sell a story we need the biff, bang, boom. A lack of care just won’t sell an article the same way a knife in the back will.”

Diana stared down at her shoes, feeling queasy. Had Harry been this callous the last time they met?

You’ve been looking at him through rose-colored glasses, girl. Time to meet reality.

“Given her age, it’s a tragedy no matter which way you look at it, but I’m in the business of selling stories and you’re…” Harry stared at her, then shrugged. “You’re in the business of getting mixed up in things you should stay well clear of.”

“I didn’t mean to get mixed up. Sunny made it impossible for me to do anything else.”

“Speaking of which, let’s go see the card in the post office that started all this trouble.”

It was only a twenty-minute walk down to the post office, but Diana insisted they take Harry’s car. It’d take a lot less than that to turn her into a puddle of sweat and she wanted to avoid doing her image any more damage. She regretted it when she touched the handle and found it loose. The vinyl of the seat had split in places, with yellowed stuffing poking out.

“Don’t look so worried, nothing in here will kill you.” Harry took off at a fast clip, making Diana slide all the way across the bench seat into him when he turned onto the main road. “That was my evil plan all along,” he said as she scrambled back into position.

The parking lot only had two other vehicles in it, so they could pull up nice and close to the office. Diana walked inside and straight up to the noticeboard, giving the woman behind the counter a friendly wave.

To the server’s credit, she didn’t look at all surprised to see someone coming in for the second time in a day.

As Harry joined her, Diana scanned the assortment of cards, looking for the one Sunny had placed up just that morning. After a second, then third glance across the board, she knew it was a lost cause.

“Someone’s taken it down since this morning,” she said, checking under the bench and on the floor in case gravity was the culprit.
