Negative Effects of Facebook

Although Facebook has had positive effects on society, like bringing many people together, it has also been shown to have some negative effects. These include losing productivity at work, ignoring real-life relationships due to Facebook distraction, low self-image or self-esteem, and Facebook addiction.

All Play, No Work

As Facebook became more popular with adults and young adults, companies started seeing a decline in productivity. In 2009, IT research company Nucleus Research reported that companies who allowed employees access to the Facebook website while at work lost 1.5 percent productivity on average. The report showed that 77 percent of workers with Facebook accounts used them while they were at work. Some employees used Facebook for as long as two hours a day while at work. The average workday is about eight hours. So this means that some employees were spending one-quarter of their time on Facebook. This type of Facebook use in the workplace resulted in distracted employees and a drop in productivity. As a result of studies such as this, many companies began to ban and block the Facebook website from their company servers. When employees attempted to log on to Facebook from a company computer, they would receive an error message.
