Once your app is built, you can focus on attracting and retaining users

Okay, so you’ve had a great idea. You have defined your business model, you have a lean team of people making things a reality, and you have gotten enough user feedback to create version 1.0 of your app. Your focus is now to attract and retain as many users as possible. Your users will be a major factor in determining the value of your company: the more you have, the more valuable you are. But how do you attract people to your app? Well, two of the most effective methods are through advertising and app store optimization (ASO).

Most businesses with mobile apps don’t begin with a huge marketing budget. However, if you have reached the stage where you have a fully operational app that can really wow people, this won’t be a problem. To start advertising your app on a basic level, you should create a website that offers more information about what it does, or what it provides. This will make your app searchable online.

You can then set up search engine advertising, such as pay-per-click, which puts your ad in front of people who search for relevant terms, but only charges you if they click through to your website. You can also try incentivizing your existing users to spread the word to their friends, perhaps by providing discounted purchases for sharing your link, or providing a free in-app gift if they share your app via social media.

The best way to get your app in front of lots of users, however, is probably with ASO. This essentially means optimizing your text and images in the app store so that when people perform a relevant search, your app will appear near the top. You should conduct some research to identify the most-effective keywords that will draw people to your app, and then use these in the title, description, and keywords sections. You should also make sure you have clear, high-quality screenshots of your app pages in your listing. These show visitors what it will be like to use your app—and they will be much more likely to download it as a result.

A good way to determine what your app should look like in the app store is to look at the top downloaded apps of the day, paying particular attention to any that are similar to yours so you can see the kind of language and images that work best. If you use the right keywords, you should have no problem drawing in users who are interested in your app.

After appropriately advertising your app and ensuring that it entices users in the app store, all you need to do is keep these users around. This simply means continuing to provide a high-quality product, using feedback to constantly enhance your offering—just as you have done from the very beginning.
