T hey hadn't gotten very far when the rain began to pelt down in large drops. Lightening flashed immediately followed by a long, loud grumble of thunder.

Marci cringed. "Holy shit, that was close."

Kara took her hand. "We need to find shelter. It's dangerous being out here with the lightning, and the sky's about to open up on us." She pointed to a clump of large boulders that included an overhang. "Over there. We can get under that rock and stay dry until the storm passes."

They ran the short distance and made it just in time as the rain poured down in thick sheets, bringing with it a chilled breeze.

Marci attempted to rub the droplets off her wet arms. "Dang, it got cold fast."

They hovered beneath the ledge that protected them from most of the torrent of moisture that soaked the surrounding forest but still suffered from a spray of rain.

Using the bottom of her water bottle, Marci swatted at spiderwebs. "Ug. Spiders," she groaned.

One side of the opening had a few more feet of space than the other, and Kara beckoned her over.

"Come over here with me," Kara said as she backed as far as possible into the corner. "Get away from the rain." As she pressed against the flat rock behind her, a sudden movement at her back caused her heart to race. She froze.

Did that large boulder just move?

She turned, tentatively placed her palms against the cool piece of granite and pressed. Slowly, the large chunk of rock swiveled away from her and revealed a dark foreboding space. A musty odor wafted toward her.

She swallowed hard.

"Ah, Marci?"

Marci's attention was focused on the spiderwebs and staying away from the torrential rain that pummeled the earth around them. "I've never seen rain like this, have you? Do you think we'll be flooded? I'd hate to hike all the way home in wet boots." She glanced upward then pointed toward the distant sky. "It looks like the clouds are breaking up. I think it’ll pass. What do you—"

Kara tugged gently at her sleeve.

"What?" Marci snapped and turned toward her.

Kara motioned toward the opening with an extended thumb.

"I think we found our cave."
