CHAPTER 11

We were at the gates of the Outdoor Education Center within minutes. There was no sign of Leroy, and I couldn’t get him to answer his phone. He shouldn't be here yet though; his plan had been to hang at the lake for the morning and bike up around the valley in the afternoon. Just in case, I left him a message telling him to stay away from the Center, under pain of death.

Childishly, I added that if Eriko wanted to check out the Center by herself, she was more than welcome.

I parked the van and got out. Marigold walked to the gate and inspected the perimeter line. “The wards haven’t been touched yet,” she said. “The shifter ward is still intact. They haven't got through.”

“Unless they have a vampire or a human to send in as a scout. We’ll need to check all the wards.”

Marigold looked worried. “They’ll split up, won’t they?”

I nodded. “They’ll be coming to test our defenses.”

We walked through to the vampire ward. “It’s still there,” Marigold said.

I sniffed the air. “Something’s off. I don’t know what it is. I feel like we’re missing something.” I looked at Marigold. “I need to run the perimeter. I’d tell you to stay here, but it’s dangerous.”

She glared at me. “I’m a witch, Imogen. I can take care of myself.”

“It’s not dangerous because you might get murdered by a roving Alpha death squad, Marigold. It’s dangerous for me. I think that Backman would literally kill me if I left you here alone.”

There was a pause. “Walk me up to the human ward,” she said, her eyes shimmering with tears. “I want to see Barbara.”

I walked her right up to the front door, where she’d laid the human ward. Backman glared at me from the steps of the main building. “I’ve never wanted to undo anything more in my life,” Marigold moaned, holding her hand out to Backman as if she were in jail.

I wisely kept my distance. “You know, you could have made the wards pure,” I said as I backed away. “That way you and Backman could have met between the human and shifter wards.”

She shrugged. “I wanted to make it as hard as possible for anyone to get through. I regret it so much now…” her voice faded to a whisper as she locked eyes with her wife.

I moved away from the building, running through the grounds of the OE center. I ran faster as I warmed up, relishing the stretch in my muscles and the heat in my chest.

It felt good to run, to exert some of the nervous energy building up in my chest. The movement burned up some of the resentment lingering in my body, the parts of me that hated Rafael for making a fool out of me by not telling me about Samara. I inhaled deeply as I ran, exhaling all the anxiety I felt about Benson, and how he only managed to stagger a few yards into the kinder playground before he had to sit down and rest.
