During the final days of the war in Europe, Hitler—the “chief robber,” as one Dutchman who’d lost his bike to German soldiers called him—committed suicide. An early death awaited other leaders who had tampered with the bicycles of the Dutch. Reich’s Commissioner Seyss-Inquart was captured and taken to Nuremberg, Germany, where, along with other top Nazi officials, he was tried by the Allies. During the trial, a lawyer asked Seyss-Inquart if he’d “turned over the essential transportation means of the Netherlands to the Reich.” Seyss-Inquart replied:
