CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Behind the Troll King’s throne, we found two large chests. One was slightly fried, the golden gilt partially melted from the heat of Sia’s Flame Wave, while the other was untouched. “Standard reward in the first one, extra in the second, I guess.”

“I will open the burnt one.” Sia walked forward and knelt in front of the chest. It was just over a meter long and half a meter wide.

I looked over it but didn’t see any indication of a trap.

He inspected around the edge, then nodded and opened our first prize. “Four neutral Aether Cores, level six. I think this is for me, too.” He stood, pulling out a massive maul. It had a two-meter-long handle made of a reddish-brown wood. The head was a fifteen-centimeter-wide block with thirty-centimeter-diameter conical sections added to either side. Straight out from the end was a fifteen-centimeter-long spike that would let it stab as well as smash. “Seed Core-level weapon.”

“You should be able to use that without too much difficulty.” I snickered. “Sia smash.”

“I will endeavor to learn how to best utilize the force this weapon can provide. Hmm, what are these Inscriptions?” Sia pointed to a set of runes at the end of the handle.

“That one means size. Oh, put some Aether into the left input rune. Earth would be best.”

He nodded, then the maul’s handle seemed to collapse into itself. The two-meter-long bit shrank to just over twenty centimeters, and the conical sections of the head collapsed down. Now, it was a moderately sized work hammer. Sia stared at it wide eyed, then looked over at me.

“Fire in the right input rune.”

With that, it extended itself back out. Earth in the right rune let it grow all the way to four meters long, though that took five times as much Aether. “This is an excellent weapon. I will be able to channel my Fire, Lightning, and Earth techniques through it as well. Shall you open the other chest?”

“Sure.” A quick scan showed no traps on this one either, so I flipped the case open. Rather, I tried to. “It’s locked! Uh, crud. Hold on.” I found the keyhole and put my hand on it. I slowly extended a tendril of Metal Aether into the hole, feeling how it touched the pieces inside the mechanism. None of the edges absorbed any of my Aether, so I was able to fully fill the area in only a few seconds, then flex it against the pins and rotate the entire mass. With a pop, the lid rose.

Six bars of gold sat on top. “This is probably a platinum’s worth of gold. Useful for Innovation City if nothing else.” I lifted them off and sucked them into my ring. Beneath them lay another neutral Aether Core, nearly twice the size of the other four. “Level seven Core, nice. This will last a long time.” Beside the Core, there were three pills, along with a note. I picked it up.

“The green pills will allow your phoenix friend to maintain his new shape without Mana costs.
