Blackstone and Franklin Squares

A block northeast of the Flour Bakery, grassy Blackstone and Franklin squares 7 [map] lie either side of Washington Street. Planned by Charles Bulfinch as a whole oval square in 1801, it was eventually constructed in 1847 as two separate, identical spaces. The cast-iron centerpiece fountains are original.

Cathedral of the Holy Cross

Further northeast along Washington Street, at no. 1400, it is impossible to miss the towering granite facade of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross 8 [map] (http://holycrossboston.com; free). Finished in 1875, and still one of the world’s largest Gothic cathedrals, it is the seat of the Catholic archbishop in Boston. Pop inside to view the enormous interior, with seating room for 3,500, and many stained-glass windows.
