Along the Lopud waterfront

Robert Harding

Across the Island

Afterwards, take the path marked Plaža Šunj 6 [map] beside the Grand Hotel and follow it for about half an hour through pine-scented woods, with conveniently situated benches, to the lovely, sandy Šunj Bay. The water is shallow and safe for children – it’s only about knee deep for a good 100 or so metres/yds. There are a couple of summer cafés serving simple food, toilets and showers, and loungers and parasols for hire. There is also an electric golf cart taxi that can transport people with limited mobility for a fee. It’s usually waiting at the harbour, so look out for it when you dock.

But don’t imagine that it’s going to be a secluded spot just because it was a bit of a hike to get here. All excursion boat passengers will have been advised that it’s the best beach on the island, and one of the few sandy ones to be found in Croatia’s Adriatic coast and islands – something that local people know well. Those who are staying on Lopud have the pleasure of knowing that when the last boat departs for Dubrovnik, the beach will be all theirs.

Food and Drink

1 [map] Hotel Božica

Suđurađ 3, Šipan; tel: 020-325 400; www.hotel-bozica.hr; €–€€

Locally grown organic produce, including olives and fresh fish, figure prominently on the menu of this classy hotel restaurant. It’s in a prime position on a terrace close to Suđurađ’s pretty little harbour – all the better to enjoy delicious Ston oysters and wines from the Pelješac peninsula.

2 [map] Palma

Obala Iva Kuljevana, Lopud; tel: 091-928 0951; €

This busy café overlooking the harbour makes some of the best ice cream you’ll find in the region. If you’re feeling particularly hungry, try one of their giant stacked ice-cream desserts.

3 [map] Restoran Dubrovnik

Obala Iva Kuljevana 40, Lopud; tel: 095-196 6312; www.restaurantdubrovnik-lopud.com; €–€€

Right by the water’s edge at the harbour is this relaxed, family-run restaurant serving good-quality seafood and Dalmatian meat dishes. It’s worth booking in advance during the summer, even by only a few hours.
