Along the Lopud waterfront
Robert Harding
Across the Island
Afterwards, take the path marked Plaža Å unj 6 [map] beside the Grand Hotel and follow it for about half an hour through pine-scented woods, with conveniently situated benches, to the lovely, sandy Å unj Bay. The water is shallow and safe for children â itâs only about knee deep for a good 100 or so metres/yds. There are a couple of summer cafés serving simple food, toilets and showers, and loungers and parasols for hire. There is also an electric golf cart taxi that can transport people with limited mobility for a fee. Itâs usually waiting at the harbour, so look out for it when you dock.
But donât imagine that itâs going to be a secluded spot just because it was a bit of a hike to get here. All excursion boat passengers will have been advised that itâs the best beach on the island, and one of the few sandy ones to be found in Croatiaâs Adriatic coast and islands â something that local people know well. Those who are staying on Lopud have the pleasure of knowing that when the last boat departs for Dubrovnik, the beach will be all theirs.

Locally grown organic produce, including olives and fresh fish, figure prominently on the menu of this classy hotel restaurant. Itâs in a prime position on a terrace close to SuÄuraÄâs pretty little harbour â all the better to enjoy delicious Ston oysters and wines from the PeljeÅ¡ac peninsula.

This busy café overlooking the harbour makes some of the best ice cream youâll find in the region. If youâre feeling particularly hungry, try one of their giant stacked ice-cream desserts.

Right by the waterâs edge at the harbour is this relaxed, family-run restaurant serving good-quality seafood and Dalmatian meat dishes. Itâs worth booking in advance during the summer, even by only a few hours.
