An alternative route from Shira Hut is to ascend to Lava Tower Hut (4,600 metres/15,090ft), climbing up the ridge towards Kibo, which takes about five hours. With an early start, there’s a steady nine-hour climb through rocky cliffs – part of the Arrow Glacier – before reaching a ridge-like staircase with a point of no return, and continuing the scramble up to the crater floor. From here, it’s about an hour and a half to Uhuru Peak. The descent is from Stella Point to Barafu Hut, with the option of continuing to Mweka Hut.
