Just south of the breakwater a German bunker houses tanks of around 6,500 turbot, ranging from tiddlers to mature 2.5lb (1kg) fish. The larger ones are sold to restaurateurs, fishmongers and the public. There are guided tours on request (minimum five people; charge, tel: 01534 868836).

From St Catherine’s Bay you can walk all the way to Gorey – or drive on the coastal B29. A distinctive landmark is the red and white Archirondel Tower º [map] on the eponymous beach, built in 1792 as a garrison for artillery soldiers. The tower has recently been restored and is now available for ‘stone hut’ holiday accommodation. Inland, a walk through St Catherine’s Wood provides a delightful shady diversion from the coast.
