CHAPTER SIX

JACK

“Is it true?” Erik asks.

The three of us have mostly sat in silence since we left the abandoned lot. Now that we’re passing through the main gate of our home, the conversation starts up.

I know what Erik’s inquiring about. My message to Vlad that I won’t be a part of Donovan’s organization much longer. The answer is a resounding yes. I plan on taking Bailey and disappearing from this sordid world of ours. She’s too pure, too innocent, to be a part of this life.

“Is what true?” I ask anyway. I have no real interest in this conversation. We’ve had a long drive to discuss it, but he chooses to cram it in on the short distance to the front door.

“You’re going to leave. . .”

“I am,” I say.

“Donovan won’t let you go,” Sam joins in.

“It’s not his decision to make. He’d be wise not to step in my way,” I say.

I bring the car to a crawl. As much as I hate the idea of doing this now, I suppose they deserve the answers. Sam and Erik are my most trusted, after all.

“That’s big talk against one of the most dangerous men in New York,” Erik says.

“I hold back against Donovan Dwight, because I want to, not because I have to,” I remind them. “I’ve made my decision and leaving is it.”

“What about us?” Sam asks.

“You’re welcome to join us.” Of course, I’ve considered my brothers in arms. I wouldn’t leave them to this mess without a life raft. It won’t be an easy ride, but it’s better than being a slave to a dangerous prick.

“We know too much. He’ll send people after us,” Erik slams a flat palm against the dashboard.

“We will deal with them as they come. My priority is to protect Bailey, and I can’t do that while I’m being ordered around.” I slow the car further.

Bailey and Margot emerge from the front door, staring at our car bewildered and excited. On realizing it’s us, they start bouncing up and down in elation.

“You haven’t thought this through,” Sam’s grim tone strikes a nerve.

“What’s sticking around doing for us?” I stare at him through the rear-view mirror. “This used to be about chasing paper. We were good at what we did, and we made our money. Now that we’ve got it, why are we going through hell for that dick?”

“Because he’s the meanest son of a bitch around. There’s no way he’s going to let us walk out scot-free,” Sam sighs.

“Free? I’ve paid my dues in blood and sweat. So have you. So has Erik. My decision is final. You’re free to do as you please.”

“Running is suicide, but it’s preferable to dying in an alley because of Donovan. If you’ve got your mind set on this, I guess it’s what we’re doing,” Erik’s temper has subsided. It’s replaced by grim angst.

“That’s one. Sam, take the time you need to decide. I won’t hold it against you if you want to stay here.” We’re nearing the end of the driveway.
