OPERATION SHABAH-2

During March 1981, the Iranian army prepared an offensive – Operation Shabah-2 (Phantom II) – against a concentration of Iraqi military east of the Karoun River, north of Kharkhe-Koor and southwest of Ahwaz. The IRIAF was tasked with providing CAS and reconnaissance. For this purpose the air force high command decided to reinforce the battered F-5-units at Vahdati through more intensive barrier-combat air patrols (BARCAP) flown by F-14As.

Operation Shabah-2 was launched on 21 August 1981. Tigers initially bombed the Iraqi position around Shadgan, Darkhovin, and Suleimaniyah, while RF-5As ran a number of recce sorties. However, contrary to earlier on in the war, the tempo of the operation was significantly decreased; by mid-September 1981 TFB.4 had only launched 86 CAS sorties, expending 373,526lbs of ammunition in the process. Despite this the IRIAF caused much trouble for the Iraqis. The supporting F-14s had scored a number of MiG kills over the battlefield, and the F-5s had hit the Iraqis so heavily that the CO of the Iraqi 10th Armoured Division ordered his long-range artillery to open fire at Vahdati AB on 25 September 1981. While some of shells fell near the armament depot, destroying six boxes with Mk.81 bombs and killing airman Gholam-Reza Allah-Morad, no other serious damage was caused.
