My brother, Alfred, had a difficult time in school, too. He struggled both with schoolwork and with the way he was treated. After a certain number of Fs, he dropped out of school in ninth grade. Alfred is smart. He’s one of those people who loves to take things apart and put them together again, who can look at pictures of how something is built and do it without reading the instructions. What we didn’t know back then was that Alfred is dyslexic and has ADD. He also struggles with anxiety. Had we known that at the time, he could have been given the help he needed to reach his full potential in education, but no one considered that they might be underestimating him. As a comparison, I dated a woman in my twenties who was similar to Alfred in her abilities. She was dyslexic, with ADHD, and suffered from anxiety. She, too, was supersmart and not the kind of person whose intelligence is captured by exam testing. The difference was that she was a White girl who had grown up in an affluent area and her learning difficulties had been identified in her school. Instead of being put into remedial classes as Alfred was for the same afflictions, she was put into honors classes, given unlimited access to private tutoring, and given extra time to take important tests. When deemed necessary, she was prescribed medicines and therapy, and she went on to get a college-level education. She did not have a perfect life, because no one does, but she sure as hell had an advantage over Alfred that she herself would admit to.
