Rory parked the truck outside the flat in Mayview Court and checked it against the address Danny had sent him. He was definitely in the right place.

‘I need another line or two to get through this,’ he said quietly to himself as he pulled the bag out of its hiding place and sniffed up the coke. He felt like it went straight up and into the back of his head, but it gave him the rush he needed to get this done.

Getting out of the truck, Rory checked the back of his jeans. The gun was still securely in place as he climbed the steps up to the entrance. Having it on him made him nervous, scared. He’d never used a gun before, and Danny had only shown him how to use it just recently, although he had also said it was highly unlikely that he’d have to use it at all. Rory prayed to the gods he didn’t even believe in that that would be the case.

The secure entry was already wedged open with a large brick. Rory picked it up and held it firmly in his hand, then slowly climbed the stairs, checking the names on each door.

Reaching number six, he saw that this door didn’t have a name on it. It did match the address Rory had, though. Lowering his hand onto the door handle, he pushed down, and to his surprise, it opened. There were shooting sounds coming from the room at the far end of the hall. Whoever was in the flat was gaming.

Rory trod softly across the old carpet towards the sound, ensuring that he was being as quiet as possible, although it was hard to believe that anyone inside wouldn’t hear his heart as it thumped in his chest.

Reaching the door, he nudged it with the brick in his left hand and allowed it to fall open. He was stood directly behind someone sat on a beige-coloured sofa with a set of headphones on.

‘Mitchell?’ Rory called, but the guy didn’t respond. Rory inched closer and pulled the headphones off his head. The guy turned around sharply and stood up.

‘Who the fuck are you?’ he said, jumping back when he saw the brick in Rory’s hand.

‘Is your name Mitchell?’ Rory asked while gritting his teeth.

Narrowing his eyes and tilting his head, he replied, ‘Who wants to know?’

‘Danny McInroy wants to know.’

Mitchell’s eyes widened for a second and then he laughed. ‘You’re not Danny McInroy.’

‘No, I’m not. But he has a message for you. You stole ten grand from him, and he wants it back with interest.’

Mitchell laughed even harder this time and shook his head. ‘You can tell Danny fucking McInroy that he can sing for it. That money’s long gone.’

‘Is that right?’ Rory said, raising his hand and launching the brick directly at the telly. The screen crumbled under the impact and Mitchell put his hands on his head.

‘Mate, what the fuck are you doing?’

Rory pulled the gun out from behind his back and pointed it at Mitchell, hoping that his trembling hands wouldn’t give him away.
