Chapter 19

Well, crap.

I stared at the green stuff on the board, and my mind turned over what my mother had just told me. “You mean . . .”

“I mean that it’s highly likely that someone who knows what you are wants you . . . well, out of the picture.”

A shiver passed through me as I let this piece of information sink in. As if the bloody knife in my door wasn’t bad enough. Who had managed to poison my tea?

“Did anyone here handle the bag before you gave it to me?” I asked.

She shook her head. “Just me. And I was by myself that night.” She bustled over to her canister of wolfsbane, opened it, and took a sniff. “This is pure.” As she screwed the lid back on, she asked, “Where did you keep the bag?”

“At my loft,” I said. “Then I took it with me to Roundtop.”

“So it was somebody at one of those two places, probably.”

But who? The only ones who knew I was a werewolf were werewolves themselves. Tom had been in my apartment, along with Teena and the Texarkana werewolves, and then there was the Houston pack—although since they had me doing spy work, it seemed unlikely. Had Tom or Teena tried to poison me? It didn’t seem likely—Tom had saved me once or twice already, and if the Texarkana girls didn’t know about wolfsbane, what were the odds they’d know about mistletoe? Even I didn’t know about mistletoe.

But I was betting Elena and the pleather boys did. And there had been another werewolf in my loft, too. The magically vanishing one.

“Sophie?” my mother asked.

My mother’s voice jerked me back to the here and now. And speaking of the here and now, I’d better get cracking if I was going to get to work on time. Or at least within an hour of on time.

The rest of my life might be a mess, but I wanted to at least keep my reputation at work. Still, before I left, I definitely needed an infusion of wolfsbane.

“Could you whip up another quick batch of tea for me? And do you have any hot water?” I asked.

“A little,” she said. “I’ll get you a fresh bag and fix you a quick travel mug.”

“That would be great,” I said.

“And I’ll cast another protection spell, too,” she said.

“Oh, no need to go to all that trouble,” I said, although to be honest, I wasn’t sure I believed myself.

“Honey, you’re going to need all the help you can get right now,” my mother said, filling a travel On The Prowl – Tales of an Urban Werewolf 02

mug and handing it to me.

She was probably right. But I wasn’t sure the kind of help she was offering was going to do me any good.

By the time I got to the office, I could feel the wolfsbane kicking in already; the sideburn growth had slowed down significantly.
