Chapter Eight

Be Careful What You Wish For

"I wasn't sure we'd make it," Imaca said as we maneuvered through the dense branches of peculiar dwarf trees adorned with exotic fruits. Now, I don't know if you've ever heard of the Garden of Eden, but let me tell you, this place was like a spitting image of it. I mean, at least in my wild imagination. Those fruits dangling from the trees looked too perfect like they were straight out of some high-budget food commercial. And to top it off, there was this soft mist creeping around, making the ground feel like a mystical carpet guiding our every step.

Jakana's little bird sat on her shoulder, chirping excitedly at the prospect of soaring among the distant canopies where other birds sang. At one point, Imaca pulled out a knife and began cutting through the branches, creating a clearing in front of us. A well stood in the center of the clearing, surrounded by lush green grass and high rocks from which flowed the most transparent water I'd ever seen. It was like something out of a dream, too perfect to be real.

Sarah and I were frozen in awe, our jaws practically hitting the floor. I'm not even kidding, I wanted to gobble up those tantalizing fruits and slurp from the well, but something inside me screamed caution. You know, like the story of Eve and that forbidden apple? No way was I about to make the same mistake.

I approached the well first. Its crystal-blue color was mesmerizing. I had to be the first one to reach it, finally proving myself useful.

As I dipped my palms into the water, a strange feeling came over me. I couldn't shake the sense that something was not quite right, but I pushed it aside and took a sip. To my relief, nothing happened.

Imaca eagerly stepped up next, copying my moves and playfully flexing his muscles. But as soon as the water touched his lips, his body started shaking violently, like he was having a seizure.

Jakana rushed to his side, holding him in her arms and gently turning him on his side to keep him safe during the seizure. She didn't seem shocked, as if she expected something like this to happen.

Imaca's eyes rolled back, turning white, and foam started pouring out of his mouth. Fear gripped me, and I felt completely helpless.

Sarah was standing beside me, just as scared as I was. She tucked her glasses into her toga. Her eyes shimmered with a mix of fear and tears. The foam coming from Imaca's mouth looked like blood, and his body kept convulsing uncontrollably. It was terrifying, and it shook us to our core.

"Slowly, slowly," Jakana softly repeated while holding Imaca in her arms. She glanced towards us and gave a gentle nod. "Everything will be fine, don't worry, such things sometimes happen in the presence of a large amount of magic."

Each passing second felt like an eternity as we watched Imaca struggle. I felt so powerless, like a coward compared to his bravery.
