The Spanish authorities reacted to the uprising with brutality, executing captured rebels, establishing areas for forcibly “reconcentrating” (the origin of the term “concentration camp”) rural citizens—referred to as reconcentrados—to prevent them from aiding the rebels, and using modern weapons against the ill-equipped rebels. The revolution faltered but stayed alive, attracting wide support in the United States, partly due to lurid tales of Spanish atrocities published in competing Hearst and Pulitzer newspapers. Some of the stories were true.
