In this case, you and your partner had a clear 4 ♠ bid, and then the opponents stole it at 5 ♥.

Do you bid 5 ♠ and go down? That’s going to get you a bottom board if everyone else was allowed to play in 4 ♠.

Your best bet is to double. If you set them by three, you’ve come out ahead of the pack.

You may also want to double if they get in over their head. Maybe they’re not trying to steal the bid, but maybe they got up too high before finding their fit. Or maybe they don’t have a fit. Or maybe you have lots of their trump. These are other good times to double for penalty.

Don’t double indiscriminately, however, because if the opponents make their bid, then they get double the points instead of you getting double the points. They also get an extra 50 points, just for the insult of being doubled. And if they were not in game—let’s say they were at three hearts—and their doubled bid makes, they’ve now reaching game without bidding. It was going to be 90 points (3x30), but now it’s 90 doubled, which is 180 and over 100, so they get the game bonus.
