I was still doing comedy, and I was conquering Pasadena. I was hardcore doing comedy by that time, and I was really putting the work in, doing the mirror time, writing the jokes, doing many sets. People were starting to pay attention. âYouâre funny!â theyâd say. But I was also bombingâa lot! At first bombing feels terrible because itâs embarrassing having everyone in the room go silent because you arenât funny. But bombing is also one of the most important tools that can shape you as a comic. You learn exactly what not to do, or exactly what to do, to fix the joke. You either will cut out what isnât working, or ride with it because you believe it will get funnier. You have to appreciate it when it happens, stick aroundâdonât run to your car and speed off in tearsâand take the ass whooping from the audience and other comics. Thatâs how you learn. Reynaldo Rey made me sit next to him one night, right by the door, so everyone could pass me and tell me how bad I was, or say âoh next timeâ¦â or âyou were good, butâ¦â Bombing will always happenâyou will get better, but as long as you perform there will be times when you bomb. So use it.
By then Iâd been doing comedy for five or six years, from â93 to â98. Around that time the comedian Joe Blount told me that he was going to do some spots in New York, and I thought, I want to go to New York.
Dave Chappelle had seen me perform, too. âYou a funny bitch,â he said, âyou should go to New York.â Martin Lawrence also said, âYou a funny big bitch.â
These important, experienced voices were convincing me.
Then I got booked at a college career convention, opening up for Method Man and Redman. They paid me $3,000. So now I had money to be able to afford the trip east. Joe Blount ended up not going, so it was just me.
So, I did itâamidst all this wonderfulness I set out for a trip to New York. For a while, I would have to say goodbye to table 5.
