Ah, how that girl loved going to the movies! We spent a lot of time together when I managed a cafeteria in the Ãlvaro Obregón district for about a year and a half. She came every now and then, at her own leisure, supposedly to help me out on the register, but I suspected she was mostly looking for company. Although she did not complain about the small amount of money she made ringing up food. Or the pack of those hideous Raleigh cigarettes she usually took with her when she was done. She was not inconsiderate, though. Never taking advantage of us being cousins. Iliana, a good friend of mine from that time, and Liliana got along well. The two of them would talk, while I was busy with work in the cafeteria, watching them from afar.
She was such a smart aleck. Once we arranged to meet at Parque Tezozómoc, near the metro station by her house. She was late and I fell asleep on the bench. She woke me up with a great laugh and told me that she had taken some photos of me looking like a drunkard in Mexico City. She always walked around with that little camera of hers hanging from her neck, taking pictures of old buildings, desolate landscapes, hurried people crossing city streets, or slumbering cousins dozing off in public spaces.
Organizing movie marathons was our thing. On Sundays, especially when we arrived early from Toluca, or when my uncle brought her back at a reasonable hour, we watched as many movies as we could. We were so addicted to movies it was not rare for us to be at the movie theater all day long, watching films from 10:00 A.M. onward. We would buy a gigantic fruit cocktail at the market and sneak it into the theaters. Once we were done with the films, Iâd invite Lili to eat at El Kioskito, a carnitas place I liked, although weâd also try the tacos de canasta by the Castillo de Chapultepec. We never missed the International Film Festival. I saw Babetteâs Feast and Red Sorghum with her. The last movie I saw with Liliana was Dark Eyes, with Marcello Mastroianni.
