Chapter Nine

Spiritual Connection

Being a witch is an ongoing journey, a path we walk as we move through our lives. The daily practices suggested above are great fast and easy ways to practice our Craft as a part of our normal activities. But it is also important to occasionally take a moment to connect with the more spiritual aspects of being a witch. This sometimes means stopping for a minute, or five, or ten, and really focusing on nature, or the elements, or deity. It can also mean spending some time to connect with yourself—your innermost thoughts and feelings, your gifts, your own special magic. You are the center of your own practice, after all.

Connect with Nature

For many of us, Witchcraft is a nature-based spiritual path, and we find it both satisfying and comforting to tune in to nature on a regular basis. Obviously, the way you go about doing that will depend to some extent on variables like where you live, what season it is, how much time you can spare, and issues of mobility, among other things. I would love to walk on the beach every day, but sadly, I don’t live anywhere near the ocean, so I have to find other ways to make my connections. But there are always plenty of options. Try doing some of these:

Take a walk: I know, it sounds simple, but much of a daily Witchcraft practice is. If you can walk somewhere peaceful and full of growing things, like a park, that’s great. But even if you can’t, you can be mindful of the sun overhead, the songs of the birds, and whatever growing things there are. Be aware of the elements of air as the wind blows, water if it rains, fire in the rays of the sun, and the earth under your feet. If there are flowers, be sure to stop and smell them!

Look out a window: If you can’t go outside, you can still connect with whatever is outside your window. If the weather is nice enough, open the window and use your senses of sight, smell, and sound to be aware of the natural world outside. Even if you can’t do that, you can look out the glass at whatever the weather is doing, or the moon if it happens to be overhead.

Be aware of insects, birds, and all the other living things we share our world with. I live in the country, so it isn’t unusual for me to look out the window and see an adorable bunny, chipmunks, squirrels, woodchucks, and even deer. During the summer, I make a special effort to get outside at dusk to watch the fireflies come out. They always seem like a little bit of nature magic to me.
