My new favorite thing is the feeling of Kayla’s arms and legs wrapped around me. Her cheek is warm as it brushes against mine as I heft her up on my back. Apparently, this little one only likes looking at the ocean. Something I figured out after she nixed snorkeling and jet skiing. So, we’re venturing into the water so she can see, it’s not that bad…once I can get her off my back.

Tapping her arm, I squeeze out. “Maybe loosen up a bit.”

“Oh, shit. Sorry,” she says as I suck in a breath. Wading out further, water laps at my waist, splashing her legs. “Are you ready for me to go deeper?”

She giggles but gives a slight nod, her hair tickling my ear, running a shiver down my spine.

Getting a good grip on her toned thighs, I take a few steps further into the water, and she doesn't squeal, thank goodness. My ears are still ringing from the last time, but the water is the perfect temperature, and her body pressed against mine is comforting. We’re waist-deep now, so I stop again to check in, offering her another squeeze.

“A little further, sweetness?”

Her hold tightens, but she gives a breathy, yeah. We’re quiet as I take a few more steps. The water splashes my chest, and she tries to scramble up a bit more, but I pull her around, so we're face to face, my hands cupping her ass as her ankles lock tight behind me.

“This isn't so bad, right?” I breathe against her lips.

Our lips brush as she says, “Only because you're here. I wouldn't do this for anyone else.”

“Do what, get in the water or come out this far?”

But she doesn’t respond. Instead, she tips her head back, saturating her hair. Gracefully righting herself, she steals the breath from my lungs. The water weighs her hair down, slicking it back, exposing all the beautiful curves and angles of her face and that long, delicate neck.

Wiping the rivulets of water from her face, she holds my gaze and says softly, “Trust. I wouldn't trust anyone else to do this with. I knew I could trust you practically from the moment we met.”

There it is again, that warm, heavy feeling, but it’s spreading now. It's no longer just tightening my chest. It’s expanding, spreading through my body and all I can do is exhale. Thinking back to that first day in the lobby, her acceptance of me stepping in with her and Carmen, and mere minutes later, taking my hand and hearing me out about the room. Yes, openness and trust have been between us from the beginning.

Kissing her soft lips, I try to convey how her words have made me feel. She trusts me. She trusts that I will protect her and keep her safe, even while doing something she fears. Something tells me that trust doesn't come easily for her and this and her candor around the subject are an accomplishment. Damn. I feel like I just won the World Series.
