Chapter 17

“June, wake up.” Elliot’s hand gently shook my hip. I couldn’t have been out long. I rubbed my stinging eyes and looked around, orientating myself to my surroundings.

“What’s going on?”

“We’re being watched.” He helped me out of bed and took me to the window. “Look behind the curtain. Be careful not to draw attention. Back row. Silver Toyota.”

I pulled the heavy fabric away and peeked out into the rainy parking lot. I blinked, trying to make out the vehicles. The rain kept the sky dark, despite the rising sun. My eyes moved from spot to spot and found the car with two people sitting in the front seat. Nervously, I laughed, “Are they after you or me?”

“I’m still voting for you.” Elliot threw our things into a bag and slipped into his jeans. I tried not to look, but failed when his t-shirt came off, and I glimpsed reddened scars on his abdomen. One ran nearly from his nipple to his bellybutton and had red dots beside it that couldn’t be anything but stitch marks. He looked like Frankenstein.

His clean shirt quickly went on, followed by his weapons. He was preparing.

While I gathered my things, I tried to formulate a plan. “What are we gonna do? That’s the only door.”

Elliot packed and assessed his weapons simultaneously. “I’m thinking. I don’t understand how they found us.” His eyes searched the room. The only window was right next to the door. “The door’s our only extraction point.”

I peeked outside; they had backed into a parking spot only a few stalls behind my car. “My car. The computer hibernates when it’s off.”

“Of course!” he exclaimed.

I rushed to pick up some clothes and went into the bathroom to throw them on, talking through the door. “I have an idea. They’re watching the car. They can’t know which room we’re in, right?” Pins and needles filled my chest again. My stomach turned with anticipation.

“Yeah, but I’m sure they are watching the motel. They’ll see us slip out.”

I tried to speak slowly, but my words rushed out. “We don’t want them to chase us. We need a diversion.”

“What did you have in mind?”

I exited the bathroom. I kept shifting my weight around. “Well…the police are here to help us, right? Well, at least help those of us that don’t have the military looking for them.” I tried to copy one of Elliot’s sly smiles to break the tension.

“Not funny.” Though his smile said differently. “The police may be looking for you too, with obstructing justice…and impersonating an officer.”

I pulled my grin back. “I think I’ll call them and report a suspicious vehicle outside the motel. When the police come, we can slip away. Even if the men in the car run or if the police talk to them, it’ll create an even better distraction.”

“We’ll need to go foot mobile and leave your car here. If they don’t see us leaving, they will if we get in it and drive away. If they’re tracking that, leaving the car will be the best.
