As I wait to cross the lights across from my apartment, a car swooshes through a puddle near the sidewalk, and I jump back, but not before a shower of water hits me in the face.

This is my final breaking point, and I’m on the verge of hysteria when I spot Evie outside my front door.

“Chels! Come here, my little drowned raccoon,” she says with her arms wide open.

“Is it that bad? My face?” I snivel as we embrace.

“Yeah, you pretty much have mascara everywhere, and yep...” Evie looks down at her shirt. “Now I do too.”

“Sorry,” I say, blinking rainwater off my lashes.

Opening my handbag, I take a square of toilet paper and blow my nose.

“What’s a shirt. No biggie,” Evie smiles. “So, what happened?”

“Everything has gone to shit.”

Evie reaches out and strokes my head like I’m Maxi, and it’s actually kind of comforting. “Here… ” She rifles through her bag. “Take these tissues. Trust me, toilet paper will chafe your nose after a while.”

I give a small laugh and hiccup into a Kleenex before opening the front door. I quickly change into some dry clothes, then I let loose.

Once I start talking, it is hard for me to stop, but Evie takes it all in with her head on one side. I detail my unceremonious dumping by Hayley and tell her how maybe, just maybe, I might get lucky again if our stars align. I also detail my run-in with Lucy and the beautiful buxom blonde. Not to mention the tsunami of water coming at me from all angles.

Evie agrees that I have had the day from hell, so we order an excessive amount of burritos and crack open some wine. There is never any judgment from Evie, only the stone-cold truth.

“Well, thank fuck things finally ended with the Dementor. And you are totally jealous. You have the hots for Lucy.”

I pretend to scoff, but I know that something is brewing with Lucy.

So, I deflect and plop down into my ratty wicker chair with my ratty hair. “Have you ever been out with a woman from New Zealand? Or would the fact that she speaks English be a deal-breaker?” I can’t help myself, but it is a fun diversion, and I even find a watery giggle.

It seems to throw her, and for once, I catch Evie off guard. “What? How did this conversation come back to me?”

I shrug. She knows this is my go-to when I don’t want to talk about me.

Evie picks up a pillow and hits me with it. “You know, Chels, I am merely dabbling my toe in international waters. It is not exclusionary by any means.”

I laugh, despite my dark mood. I’ve decided in my dealings with Alice Hanson that she is a catch. Not only that, but I have thoroughly vetted her and stalked her on LinkedIn/Facebook/Instagram, and she appears entirely normal. So, while I can’t get past the fact that we could be sisters, I think she could be a wonderful match for Evie.
