Chapter Twenty

Laura woke to the magical smell of cooking bacon. Her mouth was watering before she opened her eyes.

Except for the head shaped indent on the other pillow, the other side of her bed showed no sign it had been recently occupied. After Brett had showed her what happened to women who laughed at him, they’d gone to sleep. Neither of them had opened the conversation about whether he should stay or not. It had felt right enough not to need words.

She’d woken in the middle of the night to his hands already stoking a new fire in her, and there had been more showing. Her body felt relaxed but well used, and she stretched and enjoyed the popping of sinews. Rolling out of bed, she grabbed her robe and shrugged into it. A quick stop for tooth brushing and bathroom needs and she wandered into the kitchen.

Brett had his back to her as he stood at the stove wearing only his jeans.

Laura took a moment to thank the gods he wasn’t scared of hot grease splatters. Coming up behind him she slid her arms around his waist. “Hi.”

“Sugar,” he said, with a smile in his voice. “Anybody ever tell you that you sleep like the dead?”

She laughed. “No, but then I can’t remember being quite that worn out before.”

“Damn.” Shaking his head, he clicked his tongue. “We’re going to have to work on your stamina.”

“Are we?” Liking that more than she probably should, she took another few breaths with her cheek pressed to the warm, silky skin of his back and then went in search of coffee.

He’d already put the coffee on, and she poured herself a cup. Spotting his mug, she refilled it and doctored her own coffee. No surprise, Brett took his coffee black and strong.

Propping her hips on the counter she watched him cook bacon and eggs in her kitchen. It felt right to have him there, and maybe that should have concerned her that things were moving too fast. For the next couple of hours, it was just them, and she didn’t want to worry about the future or spend time dissecting her behavior and trying to do better than she had in the past. In a strange way, she’d swapped one cage for another.

The coffee was hot and stronger than she would have made, but it was helping clear the morning fog, so she added more creamer.

When she’d been married to Patrick, she’d felt trapped. It had crept up on her over the course of their marriage, until she had felt as if she couldn’t breathe. She’d known on her wedding day that she was making the wrong decision in marrying Patrick, but she’d lacked the vocabulary to express why. In the end, it had been easier to go through with a marriage that came close enough to seem like the real thing.

Since her fall from grace, she’d been freer to be herself, but there was always the watching for bad habits to reemerge.
