Chapter 24

Olivia woke up that morning feeling like she could take on another day of camp. Today there was nothing officially planned. Everyone in camp was encouraged to do whatever they wanted, so some members took canoes over to the lake. Others went back to the ropes course. A few took time out to be alone with a book or their phone to catch up with their friends at home.

Gabi was at one picnic table, making sketches of the camp as Olivia watched. Cody sat alone on a camp chair, picking on his guitar. He wasn’t playing full songs, just going over a few chords. Gabi watched him and began a new sketch of Cody and his guitar. Olivia was fascinated by how Gabi filled in the shadows and the textures of the sketch. It was amazing how the girl’s eye could pick up so much detail and transfer it on-to the paper. Gabi had a real talent for art, and Olivia wished she had the same creative genes as her new friend.

“I love that!” Cody said, seeing the picture for the first time. “I didn’t know you were an artist, Gabi.”

“You never asked.”

Cody examined his portrait. “This is wonderful. May I keep it?”

“Sure. I just enjoy doing it. Sketching always puts me in a good mood.” Gabi finished up the sketch and gave it to him.

“This is amazing, Gabi. Thank you.”

Olivia caught a glimpse of Sophia and Bridget approaching their table.

“Time for another group meeting,” Bridget announced as she came uncomfortably close to all three of them.

“Didn’t we have a group meeting last night?” Cody asked.

“We have to start preparing things tonight.”

“For what?” Olivia asked.

“Can’t we just chill tonight and have some s’mores. Pretty soon our conference will be over and all these fine people will have to go home.”

“Cody darling, did ya forget about our big send-off event?” Bridget asked.

“Oh yeah, the one where I was gonna order pizza for everyone?”

Bridget tilted her head. “Ya forgot, didn’t ya?”

“He does that a lot,” Sophia added.

Cody frowned. “I guess so.”

“Mexico City? The summit, remember?”

Gabi shot a look at Olivia.

“Oh, right. You wanted to protest that.”

“We should protest it. The G20 is responsible for, like, ninety percent of the world’s pollution,” Bridget said. “We can hop on our busses and go down there to Mexico and show ’em how we feel about their fecked-up policies about the environment. It’s the perfect opportunity before everyone leaves.”

“Going to Mexico—that sounds complicated. Why not go to Mount Rainer and do some more hiking. Or what about Crater Lake again? I love hiking there.”

“Crater Lake is fine with me,” Gabi said.

Bridget sighed. “Fiona and I already have the trip set up. Ya don’t have to plan a thing. All ya have to do is get on a bus with your passport.”

“Oh yeah, I like plans like that,” Cody said.

“It’s gonna be grand,” Bridget said. “We’ll get on worldwide television for sure.”

“Are you girls planning another stunt?” Cody asked. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea.
