CHAPTER 22

“Get that thing out of the pit’s ring and we’ll decide what's next,” I said, gesturing toward the dead Oni.

Mantis moved forward immediately, snapping his fingers at the sect members, of which most had been outside the dark dome during our fight.

“Rope! Now!” he yelled. “Come on! Move it! The thing is dead!”

We pulled the body back towards our carts while Mantis retrieved the head and with some issues lifted it up into the cart. Zafir, Torek, and two other men struggled to hoist the mana-draining club behind them.

“Onis are usually depicted as demonic trickster spirits,” Leih said, walking up to me. “If not enslaved to the service of some greater spiritual being, they usually wander around and kill mindlessly to sate their bloodlust.”

“And you let us fight that thing by ourselves? Miria will like that.”

“Don’t you dare talk to me about Miria! What do you know about her? I was there for when she—”

“You need to watch what you say, Leih,” I hissed and pushed him back ten steps as I bore my finger into him. “Do you think Miria would ask you such a great favor for just anyone?”

“Maybe, maybe not, but let me tell you this. That Oni had no idea where it was or why.”

“I think you’re right. No one in particular had anything to do with its summoning or it would have probably searched for the summoner instead of attacking us.”

“I would beg to differ,” Leih said thoughtfully. “I have an idea, but that’s something I don’t want to talk about. Now, are we staying here any longer?”

“Yeah, for a bit. Hold on.”

“What do you want to do with this thing?” Mantis asked. “It smells awful, and if the meat is as greasy as its skin, I sure as hell ain’t eating it. ”

“We’ll take it back whole...well,” I said, pausing as my gaze tracked up its considerable height, “In as large pieces as will fit in the carts. Perhaps Fazan can make sense of its anatomy and can use it in his alchemy. Elixirs, topical ointments, and tinctures use strange ingredients, and Onis are magical by nature. Maybe we could even have Alejna use some of its parts to make new poisons.”

“What about its weapon?” Ceres asked, pointing at the oversized, spiked club.

She reached out and ran her hand over the weapon, her palm hovering several inches above the blood-stained wood.

“Mantis? Think you can wield that thing?”

He snorted and gave me a strange look.

“I’m big, but I’m not that—hmm. Maybe once I’m a bit stronger.”

“I think it’s worth keeping,” Ceres said. “It is dead, but I can still feel this thing pulling on the mana in my pool. Maybe it is an innate property the club possesses.”

“We’ve got Asnee now. The smith can unravel that mystery, but...” I started to say as my gaze caught on the man who got wounded earlier. His arm didn’t look that good. “Leih, can you please use your mana to supercharge his regeneration?” I asked, nodding at the man.
