Surprising theories. Theory is insightful when it allows people to see deeply, imaginatively, and unconventionally, into practice, to open their eyes to new perspectives. Theory that reinforces conventional beliefs—banal theory, of which there is no shortage—doesn’t much help because it doesn’t much change behavior. Helpful theory tends to surprise, not for its own sake but because it provides insight to a reality people thought they understood, for example, that there is not one but various models of capitalism at work in different countries.
