Chapter Seven

Maddy didn’t remember much about the hours that followed, which made sense, because she was floating on a cloud.

It was early afternoon now at the Sugar Rush Bakery, and though she was sure she had only gotten a few hours of sleep last night, she wasn’t tired at all on Saturday morning.

Had she had any caffeine today?

She was pretty sure she hadn’t… Although she might have had a few sips between zoning out, thinking of last night with Caleb.

After ringing up the last customer in line, she waved goodbye as they stepped out the door. “Have a great day!” she called out. “Thanks for stopping by!”

The door closed with a friendly jangle from the bell above it.

“Madison Diane Fawkes,” Kira said from behind her, making her jump. When Maddy turned, she found her sister stepping out from the back room with a knowing smile. It was the first time the two of them had been able to really talk today. “Tell me everything.”

Maddy opened her mouth to speak, but all she could do was giggle like some lovestruck teenager.

Kira practically sprinted over, and the two of them huddled together like they used to when they whispered secrets as kids. “You and Caleb. You didn’t, did you?” Kira asked, looking scandalized and incredibly happy about it.

“No, of course not. I mean, not that there’s anything wrong if I did,” Maddy replied. “But I mean, I just met Caleb, what? Two days ago?”

“I don’t know. Sometimes these things move fast.” Kira shrugged, her smile widening. “But clearly something happened between you two. Right?”

Maddy’s dreamy sigh was answer enough.

“Oh. My. Gawd.” Kira squealed. “So, what happens now?”

“Honestly? I have no idea.” Maddy surprised herself by chuckling. “I feel like things are moving pretty fast, but… I don’t know. It doesn’t feel too fast. Does that make sense?”

“Perfect sense. Sometimes it just clicks.”

“Oh, they did more than that last night,” Maddy remarked, sending them both into a fit of laughter. “Seriously though, what am I going to do?”

“About what?”

“All of this.” She wrinkled her nose. “It’s not like I’m planning to stay past Christmas, and Caleb’s so nice and… I just don’t want to mess anything up.”

Kira grabbed her hands. “Look, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I think you should just go with it.”

Maddy tilted her head. “You’re telling me I should just go with the flow?”

Kira stuck her tongue out. “Let’s call it a Christmas miracle.”

“I’ll break the good news to Mom and Dad. It’ll be better than the presents we sent over.”

Harrison stepped out from the back room with a full tray of Christmas cookies, just in time for another spurt of customers.

While Kira and Harrison went into the back room to make up a new batch of pancake donuts, Maddy handled the register.

By the time 4 PM rolled around, Maddy couldn’t help but feel satisfied with how she had spent her day. Everyone coming into the bakery seemed happy to be there, especially when they found more than enough pastries ready for everyone.
