LOG ENTRY #63: NERD'S PARADISE

Right then, this is another of my pet peeves and I may rant a little.

The fact that the first batch of our citizens were mostly assembled from scientists and ex-soldiers has come back to bite me on the ass. My predicament is that they are mostly nerds (OK, so am I, but that’s beside the point). Even a good percentage of the ex-soldiers we recruited, who a civilian would expect to be partial to wars and conflicts, aren’t like that in reality (they’re nerds at heart just as much as the first group). Which stands to reason as they usually had a lot of downtime during their deployments. Reading copious amounts of literature was always a good way to stamp out the monotony. And don’t get me started on all the astronauts Jake managed to convince to move up here. Their heads were always in the clouds anyway, so they were naturally partial to crazy and unrealistic ideas.

The problem began with the part of the space station that the original designers made into a freaking Rivendell; they combined the designs from the movies which they outright stole, with what their minds had envisioned from reading The Lord of the Rings books. Well, ever since that project enflamed the imagination of our population, a few more ideas inspired by the elven city have sprung up. All our citizens have full access to the same Internet the rest of humanity uses, but there’s also our own internal net, which mostly deals with happenings within our nation. (Just to be clear, no Earthers have access to it, why should they?)

There is a site on our network which deals with future projects and the environment our citizens would like to live in. The site isn’t much of a bother to maintain, and I get some great ideas in the process. Everything would be all well and good if several of the ideas weren’t quite so popular, and in my opinion, more than a bit… out there? (Not to mention a gross violation of IP rights if the projects do get approved.) Yet, they’ll have to be approved by me, which is nice as I can veto them, or simply procrastinate indefinitely, claiming prior plans and obligations. Although, to tell the truth, I kind of like some of those ideas. (I told you; I’m a nerd myself.)

The first one is to take one of the smaller levels and turn it into an idealized copy of Themyscira; the secret, hidden paradise island inhabited by the Amazons of myth. The plan only calls for the creation of the island; I can do nothing about the Amazons themselves (not being one of the Olympian Gods).

It’s not a bad idea and, in fact, several very successful architects and graphics designers are involved in the project and are creating detailed 3D plans available for critique by the general population. Its design is influenced by Greek architecture and could be made into an idyllic reproduction of the fictitious place.
