We had to dust, pack boxes, run errands, scrub, and clean the metal parts of the showcases, the stairs, and so forth. That was not particularly pleasant work, especially in winter. We shivered with cold in the early hours of the morning when we stood in front of the shop door, cleaning the brass rods of the windows. Our fingers became swollen and turned purple, and our chilblains often burst open.

Only now and again during the Christmas season were the female apprentices allowed to do the actual work of selling. The rest of the time, they were mostly kept busy tidying up and scouring.
