Five common risk factors raise the odds of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. When you have at least three, you have a health problem known as metabolic syndrome, which is closely related to insulin resistance. The five risk factors are:
high fasting blood sugar levels
a large waistline (abdominal obesity)
high triglycerides
low HDL cholesterol
