Woven Fabric: Warp and Weft

Woven fabrics are created on a loom, with lengthwise (warp) and crosswise (weft) threads. The weft threads are woven over and under the warp threads in different patterns depending on the desired weave. The threads are then “combed” into place with a reed that keeps the threads straight and compact. The plain weave is the most common weave, with a consistent “one over, one under” pattern. Twill weaves with their distinctive diagonal lines produce strong and durable fabrics that are often used to make pants. Satin weave fabrics have a smooth surface because the warp yarns float over several weft yarns; they tend to unravel more than the other two weaves. All woven fabrics have a selvage, or finished edge, along the outside edges of the warp yarns.
