It is a simple and well-known adage that something can only be truly appreciated once it is lost.

Given enough time, all beings are forced to accept this difficult truth. Whether it is something or someone precious, eventually all beings must contend with profound loss.

People will go to great lengths to avoid loss. They will even do things they never thought themselves capable of. It’s within all of us—the ability to commit terrible atrocities in defense of that which we refuse to lose.

To lose everything all at once—one’s love, one’s home, one’s very sense of self—such a loss is guaranteed to either strengthen an individual beyond recognition or break them beyond repair. Either way, loss is always an opportunity—one that we must grow accustomed to the longer time goes on.

Even I cannot change this foundational principle of reality. Not yet.
