The nine levels of meditative concentration

Expectations duly managed, there’s a yardstick we can use to identify our progress. It’s called the nine levels of meditative concentration and has been with us since at least the time of the Buddha.

What I find reassuring about these levels is that the first two stages are described as those of a meditator who spends more time distracted than on the object of meditation. Agitation is the norm. There’s hope for us all yet!

Level 1: Placing the mind

At this stage you spend more time during each session being distracted than focusing on the object of meditation. While you can place your mind on the object of meditation for short periods, you also become aware, perhaps for the first time, of the full extent of your mental agitation. There’s only one way from here and it’s up!

Level 2: Placement with continuity

While most of your meditation session is still distracted, you can sometimes hold the object of concentration for two minutes or more before being interrupted by gross agitation or dullness.
