Let’s go somewhere tonight. Outside of town. I want to take you out.

Helena was surprised by the text she got after work the next day. Ever since the harassment, they were much more inclined to stay in night after night. They didn’t really go out anymore.

She was excited at the prospect of spending time with Matt doing something different, but it also brought back the gnawing feeling at the edges of her thoughts. She agreed to the date and spent the rest of the day wondering what she would encounter when she saw him.

Matt seemed on edge when he picked her up. He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel and she caught his leg shaking just a little as they drove away from the house.

“Something on your mind?” Helena asked.

“Just us,” Matt admitted. “And how I want to change things. Everything is opening up for us, Helena. It’s happening. You’ll see.”

Matt drove out of town and soon Helena recognized they were headed for the park where they hiked. He didn’t bring her to the lot at the trailhead, but to a different entrance of the park. Helena’s spine tingled slightly as they ventured deeper into the darkening woods. It felt strange being here at night. She’d wandered these trails before, but always in the bright sunlight. The growing darkness and Matt’s prickling energy made the park feel far more ominous.

After what felt like a long drive, they stopped by a lake. Being out of the cover of the trees made their surroundings less dark and the lake itself was lovely. Helena took a breath, telling herself to relax.

“I thought this might be a nice place for us to enjoy ourselves a bit,” he said.

“I love it,” Helena said, stepping out of the car. “It seems like the perfect place to watch the sunset.”

Hand in hand they walked down to the water. The shades of the sky shifting into orange, pink, and purple reminded Helena of dragon scales reflecting on the water. The ducks swimming by were innocents that would possibly struggle to make it through the night full of predators. But for now, they were happy, content as the paddled along the lake.

“This should be us every day,” Matt said, as they finally stopped in the soft, slightly damp sand. He kissed her hand as they admired the colors. “You know that, don’t you? We really do need to be able to be together like this. It would be much better for our relationship if I can make this happen.”

Helena nodded.

“I know,” she said.

“I will do anything, Helena, to make this happen. I want you to know that. I promise you, I will do anything I need to do to make sure our relationship thrives. I want you in my life. I want to show the world how much I love you. We’re worth so much more than this, so I’ll make sure our relationship is cherished in the way it should be.

“For so long I’ve told myself I could stick it out.
